NFL Player Charged with DUI Manslaughter after Killing Pedestrian
Donte Stallworth will face charges of DUI and manslaughter after killing a pedestrian that was trying to cross a street in the early morning in Miami.
Investigators have determined that Donte Stallworth’s blood alcohol content was .126 at the time of the deadly accident that killed 59-year-old Mario Reyes. Reyes was just getting off of his shift as a construction crane operator when he was hit by Stallworth as he attempted to cross a major highway in Miami Beach. The accident occurred at approximately 7:15 AM and Reyes was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The police report states that Stallworth said he flashed his lights at Reyes as he approached, apparently warning the pedestrian to clear out of his way. But Reyes was struck and died as a result of his injuries.
Stallworth told police that he “hit the man lying in the road” and police smelled alcohol on his breath and noticed that he appeared to have been drinking recently. Stallworth was reportedly on his way to a nearby home after having spent most of the early hours of the morning at the Fontainebleau hotel in South Beach. Stallworth was reportedly traveling 50 mph in a 40 mph zone.
In today’s day and age, you have to be at least mildly surprised that Stallworth actually stayed at the scene of the accident and didn’t attempt to flee or immediately stop talking and wait for his lawyer. Stallworth made a tremendous mistake and a person is dead as a result . Stallworth is going to likely face some jail time and his injury-riddled NFL career is likely now over before it ever really got started.
And none of that really matters in light of the fact that a man is dead and his family is left to pick up the pieces.
